Robert Manning hollows a camphor log in his darkened studio with a small lamp
inside the spinning form. The light transmitted through the thin wood indicates the
vessel's wall thickness by its degree of translucence.
The Artist
Robert Manning communicates visually through a world of texture and space centered around the wood that has attracted him since age five when his grandfather built him his first set of sawhorses. A native Californian, Robert was initially attracted to woodworking, photography, graphic arts, metalworking, and ceramics. Exploration of these media as a young man helped him develop the sweeping sense of line and contrast that are now seen in his turned and sculptural wood creations. During the early 1980s, an enduring interest in blue water sailing and the newly minted sport of windsurfing prompted him to experiment with surface flight (the dynamic interaction between sailboard, wind, and water), and resulted in the creation of an innovative series of windsurfers that he manufactured along with custom mahogany and spruce water skis in his fathers workshop.
Creative projects wedged themselves into the rare openings in his career as a designer/builder serving clients in Brentwood, Beverly Hills, and the California mountain resort communities,
He eventually refocused his attention upon fine art specifically fine wood art. Robert currently divides his time between designing and building museum-quality wood kayaks, designing and turning exotic segmented and organic wood bowls for discriminating collectors, and creating multimedia sculptures.
Since adding creative woodturning to his palette, Robert has been juried into many major national and international exhibitions. His first foray into the world of international juried art featured his custom wood kayaks, which wonthree awards at the prestigious 2008 Design In Wood exhibition. Thisjuried competitionalso featured his turned art for the first time. Roberts woodturnings can be found in an expanding array of collections.
Robert lives in his studio in southern California. Visitors are welcome.
